Happy Valentine’s Day. Today is the day we celebrate love and gifts are exchanged between lovers. Chuck and I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day as we have our Yummy Days instead. But for a lot of people, Valentine’s Day is the day to go out for a nice meal and have a romantic date night.
Though we don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, we do celebrate love. But what is love? Paul described love best when he wrote the following:
1 Corinthians 13:4-8New International Version (NIV)
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.8 Love never fails.
When Chuck and I were dating, I often read this passage but would substitute the word ‘love’ for ‘Chuck’:
Chuck is patient, Chuck is kind. Chuck does not envy, he does not boast and is not proud. Chuck does not dishonor others, he is not self-seeking, he is not easily angered and keeps no record of wrongs. Chuck does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Chuck always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserveres. Chuck never fails.
All these years together, Chuck has loved me, even when I wasn’t easy to love. And I’ve loved him even when he wasn’t kind, or did boast. And love is worth celebrating every day, not just on Valentine’s Day.
